Olevat tõlge ühest kreekakeelsest idioomist (PERILUPOS ESTIN hH PSUCH
MOU), mis inglise keeles võiks kõlada hoopis 'deeply grieved is the soul of me'. Kirjakohad piiblist samuti antud, neis esineb ka tõlge 'my soul is overwhelmed with sorrow'
Eesti keeli siis: (Mk 14.34) "Mu hing on väga kurb surmani." ja (Mt 26.38) "Mu hing on väga kurb surmani."
Allan Johnson, 'native speaker of American English' seletab väljendi tähendust:
a deep sorrow, made fuller by the figurative, poetic expression of it. Being "swallowed up" by this sorrow seems to communicate an idea of completeness - a sorrow so overwhelming that nothing else matters anymore. Saying it is "my soul" that is swallowed up in this sorrow adds still more to its completeness. My soul - the essence of all that I am; my very being and existence - have been overtaken by this sorrow.
Richard Rhodes lisab kognitiiv-semantiliselt manitsusi leksikograafidele:
"As for someone whose office is directly across the hall from George Lakoff's, I'll say this is not just a figure of speech, but a metaphor in the usual literary (pre-Lakovian) sense. Of course, George would have an analysis for it with 'swallowed up in sorrow' being doubly metaphoric, mapping large expanses onto faceless faces having virtual mouths, and then mapping sorrow onto a large expanse. But even though something along this line is the right analyses, it misses the point, as Lakovian analysis regularly does, that there are metaphors like this one are very conscious (in contrast to the MORE is UP kind). And that "loosens" the reins of metaphor, to speak metaphorically. /---/
The trick is that 'sorrow' is not a metaphorical expanse except when predicated of 'swallow'. This leads to the question of how to manage such collocational facts."
